Known BYOND Bugs

NEStalgia was created using the BYOND game creation system, and thus is subject to bugs within the BYOND software that the Silk Games team may not be able to control. This page is intended to help players identify these issues and to provide possible workarounds until the bugs are fixed.

"Blank Text" Issue

Caused by an unidentified BYOND cache error, the text labels within NEStalgia's interface may sometimes disappear completely. This glitch is random, but seems to trigger more frequently when players are logged in during a server reboot or shut down.

An example of a working interface:

The same interface afflicted with the bug:

Fixing the Bug

If you've fallen victim to the glitch, then follow these steps to fix your system:

   Open BYOND (the BYOND pager)
   Go to File > Preferences
   Click on the Games tab
   Click the Clear Cache button
   Restart your computer

Preventing the Bug

Installing the custom font that NEStalgia's interface uses on your system prevents the glitch from happening. The font is available for download as a true type font, which can be easily installed into any version of Windows:

NEStalgia.ttf

Please note that this font is not to be used in your personal BYOND project or distributed on any other web sites.

"Opaque Tiles" Bug

This bug occurs rarely when a player enters a new screen (walking up/down stairs, entering a town, going into battle). The severity is variable, but the bug causes certain tiles on the map to go opaque and appear as pure black.

A moderate example:

A minor example - notice the black tile near the beds in the top right:

A severe case:

Fixing the Bug

Many times just entering a new area via stairs or a doorway resolves the issue. In certain situations players may need to log out and reconnect to the game. This glitch is purely visual - no damage is done to the world or your character files.

At this time there are no workarounds or ways to prevent this bug from happening.

Overlapping Music Glitch

This glitch occasionally happens when a piece of music doesn't stop playing properly and then overlaps another song, both of them playing simultaneously.

Fixing the Bug

Press F4 or click the Music/SFX button to cycle the music off and then on again. This will restart the correct piece of music without the overlap.
