NEStalgia Version Notes The following is a list of the documented changes for each NEStalgia update provided by the development team. Keep in mind that some changes may not be documented, therefore these lists are not always 100% percent complete.

v1.68 (Unreleased)

  • Color Palette
    • The game's color palette has been changed to more closely resemble a true NES palette. This new look is not intended to be a 100% accurate representation of the NES color palette or its technical limitations.
    • The color palettes for player characters and their guild capes remain unchanged.
  • Game Menus
    • The color scheme of all the in-game menus, buttons and HUDs has been changed from a White-Grey-Blue scheme to a White on Black design.
    • Colored text is now used throughout the game's HUDs in order to improve the readability of menus and to highlight important information.
    • A new Battle Use/Cast Prompt interface has been designed to display much more useful information when using an Item or Ability in battle.
    • The "Overworld Cast Prompts" preferences toggle has been changed to "Cast Prompts", and now acts as the toggle for both overworld and battle cast prompts. This toggle does not apply to item prompts in battle.
  • Skill Trees
    • Skill Trees for every character class have been completely redesigned. Though they are functionally similar to the previous system, the new trees are more intuitive and allow for greater customization.
    • The Foundation Tree has been absorbed into the main skill trees for each class.
    • Elemental Enchants have been removed from Skill Trees (these enchants now function on a per-weapon basis)
  • Character Stats
    • The caps on all stats have been removed.
    • Strength now divides into 3/4 Attack points and 1/4 Defense points (previously 1 Attack and 1/4 Defense).
    • Agility now divides into 1/4 Defense points (it previously did not affect Defense). All of Agility's other benefits are unchanged.
    • The damage-reduction benefit of the Defense stat has been slightly reduced, especially in circumstances when the attacker has much lower Attack power.
    • Plus Fire, Plus Ice and Plus Storm no longer function based on percentages and now give a direct 1:1 bonus to elemental damage. Fire, Ice and Storm resist have also been adjusted to a 1:1 subtraction from elemental damage.
    • Plus Heal also no longer functions based on percentages and gives a direct 1:1 bonus to healing.
    • The Spell Piercing and Resilience stats have been removed.
    • The Extra Exp and Extra Gold stats have been renamed to Plus Exp and Plus Gold (again!).
    • The Extra Item stat has been removed and folded into a new stat: Luck.
    • Luck is a new core stat that impacts the success rate of random chance abilities (both on attack and defense), and also provides a bonus to item finding.
      • Each point of Luck equals plus or minus 1/3% to the success rate of random chance abilities. Each point of Luck above 2x the Character or Companion's level provides a benefit to item finding (the same benefit provided by the previous Extra Item stat).
    • The base stats for all character classes, companions and monsters have been tweaked to accommodate the stat changes.
  • Stat Seeds
    • New (Large) +3 sized seeds have replaced most of the existing (Medium) +2 seeds at vendors.
    • All eligible (Medium) +2 seeds already used on characters and companions will automatically become (Large) +3 seeds. Any unused seeds will remain unchanged.
    • Spell Piercing Seeds have been replaced by new Elemental Seeds, which give +1 or +2 to all Plus Element stats (Plus Fire, Ice and Storm).
    • Resilience Seeds have been replaced by new Resistance Seeds, which give +1 or + 2 to all Resist Element stats (Fire, Ice and Storm Resist).
    • Extra Item Seeds have been replaced by new Luck Seeds, which give +1, +2 or +3 to Luck.
    • The Black Sanctum rewards vendor now sells new Resistance Seeds (Medium) that give +2 to all Element Resist stats (Fire, Ice and Storm Resist). The vendor also sells the new Elemental Seeds (Medium).
    • Most types of seeds have been redistributed throughout the game to be more readily available.
  • Weapons and Armor
    • The stats on many of the available weapons and pieces of armor in the game have been slightly adjusted to account for the major changes to the functions of the character stats. The power of all affected gear should be either comparable or superior to what it was before.
    • The Item Detail HUD for each item has been enlarged to more clearly display which classes can equip that item.
    • Weapon Enchants have been introduced. These enchants can be applied to any weapon for a 1:1 boost to weapon damage based upon the enchantment element and the character's related Plus Element stat.
  • Status Effects
    • The "Mirage" status ailment has been renamed to "Blind" for consistency throughout the game.
    • The "Curse" status ailment now reduces the victim's Luck stat to 0 for the duration of the effect. The heal-reduction effect of "Curse" is unchanged.
  • Abilities
    • Most of the significant stats for each ability are now visible in the player's Spell Book, including "Power" (the amount of the character's intelligence the spell uses), "Base HP" (the base healing amount of all healing spells), and "+Element Cap" (the maximum amount of the Plus Element stat that the ability will benefit from).
    • Many "single target" direct damage spells can now inflict critical hits
    • All abilities that target groups of monsters have either been removed or changed into "target all" type spells.
    • All counter-attack and Cross abilities will now trigger when the caster is struck by any type of direct damage, including "target all" abilities.
    • A new type of ability has been introduced; "Pilfer" and "Mug" are single-target abilities that have a chance to steal an item from regular foes or other players. If the target of Pilfer/Mug is a player, either the highest value item or the item the player has selected to use that round will be stolen. Only single-use battle items such as Potions and Magic Herbs can be stolen from players.
  • Monsters
    • Most foes now have a chance to be carrying an item that can be stolen using the new "Pilfer" or "Mug" abilities.
    • Bandit, Highwaymen, Crypt Raider and Pirate foes can now use the new "Mug" ability (and so can their companion counterparts)
    • The "Usable Item" loot table that governs single-use drops such as Potions, Scrolls and Seeds is now based upon the types of foes present in each battle. All other loot tables are unchanged (still based upon region).
  • Companions
    • The stat benefits of most companion Reserve Bonuses are now based upon the companion's level.
    • The HUD for Reserve Bonuses has been redesigned to be easier to read; the current stat benefit of Reserve Bonuses are now displayed as well.
    • Companion battle abilities can now be toggled on/off in the overworld spell book HUD. Companions will never use a battle ability that has been toggled off.
  • Character Classes
    • As noted above, the Skill Trees for each character class have been completely redesigned. The following notes offer a general overview of the significant changes to each class:
    • Ranger
      • Rangers now learn Heal, HealMore, Sense, Counter and Lightning automatically as they level up.
      • Rangers can now learn "VoltCross" via their skill trees.
      • Notable overall class changes: Rangers have more Agility and are better natural healers by default. Rangers are also now the only character class that learn Storm spells, and can be specced to become very powerful casters.
      • The ability on the Malevolent Bow has been changed from VoltCross to EpicShock.
    • Soldier
      • Soldiers now learn Headbutt, Impale and Roar automatically as they level up.
      • Notable overall class changes: Soldiers have less built-in Defense and very little Luck. The Berserker tree now allows Soldiers to focus on high-damage, high-critical hit specs, while the Guardian tree can transform the character into a true tank with more Defense and damage reduction skills than any other class.
    • Merchant
      • Merchants now learn Pilfer, Vault, Trade and Deflate automatically as they level up.
      • Merchants can now learn "Bankrupt", a self-use ability that prevents them from being knocked out that round. The following round the Merchant is rendered Stunned.
      • Merchants can now learn "Distract", a self-use ability that taunts all enemies to attack the Merchant that round.
      • The "Dividends" ability has been removed.
      • Notable overall class changes: Merchants have a high amount of Luck and more Intelligence, but less Attack and Defense power. Between the addition of several new abilities and a complete revamp of the class's Skill Trees, the overriding theme was to further differentiate Merchants from Soldiers.
    • Ninja
      • Ninjas now learn Evade, Pilfer and 5-Point automatically as they level up.
      • Ninjas' new "Evade" ability allows them to guard themselves or an ally and while increasing their chance to dodge incoming attacks.
      • Ninjas can now learn "StormKick", which deals magical instead of physical damage to a single target.
      • The "Trick" ability has been removed.
      • Notable overall class changes: Ninjas have more Agility and Attack power, but slightly less HP and Defense. Their Assailant tree now provides many more options to increase damage and critical hit chances. The Elusion tree has also been greatly improved, allowing Ninjas to frustrate enemies with status impairments and to dodge all incoming attacks (including Spells).

v1.67

  • Performance
    • The base code has been compiled in BYOND v501.1213. Players accessing the game directly from BYOND instead of the standalone version of NEStalgia will need to upgrade their BYOND client. This upgrade should improve the overall speed of the game.
  • Gampeplay
    • The Steamonia Tower has been permanently integrated into the game as a level 32 dungeon.
  • Balance
    • The power of all AoE attacks have been slightly reduced.
    • All AoE HP-steal abilities now only return HP equal to half of the damage that they inflict.
    • The base success rate of the ability DarkTears has been reduced by 5%
  • Bug Fixes

v1.67.3

  • Features
    • Hotkeys for Items and Abilities can now be mapped to keys 1, 2, 3 or 4 for use in the overworld.
    • 'BYOND Medals' are now 'Achievements'. A new Achievement tab can be found in the player status HUD.
    • Achievements now pop up onscreen in a display box when earned.
    • Overworld screen flashes can now be disabled via the in-game Preferences menu.

  • Interface
    • The game can now be toggled into Full Screen Mode.
    • The main game window can now be re-sized to display tiles at 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 80x80, or fit-to-screen (previously on the 32x32 and fit-to-screen options were available).
    • The game interface has been revamped; most functions are now accessible through menus below the titlebar.
    • Players can now toggle the background of the text output pane to be either black or white.
    • Timestamps are now shown in the text output pane.
  • The Colosseum
    • Spectating battles at the Colosseum has been redesigned to be more intuitive. During a match spectators can close the announcer dialogue box at any time. To enable or disable seeing the dialogue box, players simply need to enter or exit the stools surrounding the Colosseum ring.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Several minor bug fixes.

v1.67.4

v1.67.5

v1.67.7

  • Server Improvements
    • Upgraded the base version of BYOND, which should make for noticeable speed improvements on all servers. Please report any new issues that pop up to the bug reports board.

v1.66

  • Balance
    • The power of companion Reserve Bonus Abilities is now based upon the reserve companion's stats (instead of the player's stats).
  • Bug Fixes

v1.65

  • Performance
    • Many "under the hood" efficiency improvements have been implemented in order to reduce server slowdown and lag.
  • Companions
    • The Companion Ranch now uses separate "bins" to store companions instead of a long list of pages.
    • The total number of available companion storage slots has been decreased from a possible max of 90 down to 63. Any player with more than 63 stored companions will be able to access their excess companions by clearing out storage space. Players who have previously purchased more than 9 additional pages worth of companion storage will have their gold refunded.
    • When using two companions with identical reserve bonuses, players will now only receive passive stat boosts from one of the companions. The same applies to duplicate abilities; only one of the two companions' reserve bonus abilities will be usable during the battle.
  • Balance
    • The base power of group targeted HP Steal abilities such as Siphon and HolyTears has been reduced.

v1.65.1

  • Server
    • Open PvP servers no longer allow forced PvP in towns.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Players with an "excess companions" storage list at the ranch were not always seeing their extra companions load when freeing up space.

v1.65.2

  • Performance
    • An error in a recursive loop in the guard patrolling routines could lead to exponential server slowdown over time if a player with companions idled near the guards.

v1.65.3

  • Performance
    • Optimizations have been made to the Marketplace to increases saving efficiency and overall speed.
  • Marketplace
    • Items listed for sale on the Marketplace will no longer occupy a placeholder position in players' vaults. Instead, all listings are kept at the Marketplace with the "Listings" NPC until they're either sold or retrieved by the seller after expiring.
    • Players' listed Marketplace items are now shared between characters, and up to 3 bins with 6 slots each can be purchased. Only subscribers can withdraw items from this list that were placed up for sale by different characters.
    • Items that expire from the Marketplace will now be deleted after 15 days. Sellers must manually retrieve their expired items from the Marketplace in order to prevent deletion.
    • The login notification HUD for sold Marketplace items has been replaced with a simple text notification.
    • Apart from the once-nightly "day change" maintenance routine, players will no longer be kicked out of the various Marketplace menus by the automated maintenance system.
    • Due to internal changes in this update, all existing Marketplace listings have been removed. In order to retrieve these items, the seller must log in before September 6th; otherwise items will expire from the server's marketplace storage list. Upon logging in, all recovered listings will be automatically placed in the seller's vault.
  • Vault
    • The separate Shared Vault has been completely removed. In its place, the regular Vault now functions as a shared vault for subscribers (identical to the way that the Companion Ranch already works). All items that players had stored in the Shared Vault have been transferred to their new vault.
    • The Vault now uses individual bins to sort and store items. Players can purchase up to nine bins with 9 storage slots each.
    • If a player's vault does not have the capacity to hold all of the previously listed or newly transferred items, those items will be placed in the vault as space becomes available.
  • PvP
    • The Logout Timer will now only count down from 4 seconds if the player is in a PvP restricted zone on an Open PvP server
    • The "Future Verity" area is no longer a PvP restricted zone

  • Bug Fixes
    • The reserve bonus duplicate restriction was applying to ability-based reserve bonuses for group members with duplicate reserves.

These single-use items somewhat increase the chance to recruit a single foe (the base rate is 1/50) and come in three varieties: Bronze (rate: 1/30), Silver (rate: 1/20) and Gold (rate: 1/10). Bronze and Silver Charms can be purchased at item merchants.
