Experience is used to increase a player's or companion's level. As their level increases, the amount of experience needed by a player or companion to gain another level increases as well. The amount of experience needed by companions on a level by level basis is less than that of a player. Experience is earned by being alive at the end of a fight and by completing most quests.

Like with gold, experience will not be rewarded to a party at the end of a fight if there is a difference of more than seven levels between two or all three of that party's members.
