Treasure chests typically contain items or gold but on occasion are actually an enemy that resembles a chest such as a Chester. Some of the items found in a treasure chest can not be found elsewhere in the game, and some of these items are tied into a quest. It is thus important to open any chests you find in the case that one of those chests houses a quest item necessary for progressing further into the game.
